Inhaler Vendors And Their Comparison Including Market Share

The largest manufacturers of inhalers are GlaxoSmithKline (makers of the Advair Diskus and Flixotide), Merck (makers of Asmanex and Proventil HFA), AstraZeneca (makers of Pulmicort and Symbicort) and Boehringer-Ingelheim (makers of Atrovent, Combivent, and Spiriva which are used for asthma, COPD, and emphysema). They all manufacture the medication that is delivered by the inhaler, but 3M Drug Delivery Systems does some of the manufacturing of the MDI canisters and other inhaler components and asthma supplies. In 2011, these companies had the following percentages of the global market share: GlaxoSmithKline 4.01%, Merck 4.76%, AstraZeneca 4.40%, and Boehringer-Ingelheim 1.93%.

In 2000 GlaxoWellcome and SmithKline Beecham had a 7% share of the global pharmaceutical market, combined. The two combined companies accounted for 26% of all vaccine sales, and 17% of all anti-invectives (antibiotics, etc.). In January 2001, Glaxo Wellcome and SmithKline Beecham merged to become GlaxoSmithKline. They manufacture products for major disease areas including asthma, cancer, virus control, infections, mental health, diabetes, and digestive conditions. They manufacture the Advair Diskus, a combination of a long acting beta agonist and inhaled corticosteroid (ICS), and Flixotide (an ICS), both used for asthma treatment.

In 2009, Merck and Schering-Plough combined to create the world’s second-largest pharmaceutical company by market share. They have prescription products in cardiovascular disease, respiratory disease, oncology, neuroscience, infectious disease, immunology and women's health.

It is currently one of the world's seven largest pharmaceutical companies by market capitalization and revenue. They manufacture the asthma medications Asmanex (an ICS) and Proventil HFA (a short acting beta agonist).

AstraZeneca is one of the top five pharmaceutical companies in the world with healthcare sales of $15.8 billion and leading positions in sales of gastrointestinal, oncology, anesthesia (including pain management), cardiovascular, central nervous system (CNS) and respiratory products. Other major inhaler manufactures include Teva Pharmaceutical Industries and Sunovion Pharmaceuticals Inc. Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. is among the top 15 pharmaceutical companies in the world and is a global leader in generic pharmaceuticals, (with over 20% market share in the US generics market). They manufacture the short acting beta agonist inhaler Proair HFA (albuterol) which is used by asthmatics as a rescue inhaler and the inhaled corticosteroid inhaler Qvar (beclomethasone). Sunovion Pharmaceuticals Inc. (previously known as Sepracor) produces drugs for respiratory conditions and disorders of the central nervous system. They are known for manufacturing Xopenex HFA inhalation aerosol and Xopenex inhalation solution for nebulizers as well as the Alvesco inhaler (an inhaled corticosteroid).
