Priming

Metered Dose Inhalers (MDIs) require priming.

Priming of the inhaler is necessary for effective use of the MDI inhaler and to deliver a correct amount of dose into the lungs. Priming means to make your inhaler ready for use. Priming is done when the inhaler is being used for the first time or if it is used after a long interval of time.

Different MDI types have different priming instructions:

Proventil HFA® (MDI)

As with all aerosol medications, it is recommended to prime the inhaler before using for the first time and in cases where the inhaler has not been used for more than 2 weeks. Prime the inhaler by releasing four “test sprays” into the air and away from your face.
